The house is about 50 years old with the cloth covered wires. In my bedroom just installed a ceiling fan and light. Before installation, from my bedroom ceiling three wires came threw two of which are the black and white wires for the ceiling fan and light and one I’m not sure what it does, wasn’t connect to anything previously.
The PROBLEM- I installed the fan and light both working just fine, but now the lights in the next room over and my porch light do not work. The oulets in those rooms work but not the ceiling fixtues.
Any ideas to the problem? I’m guessing I dislodged a wire when installing the ceiling fan that ran power to the other rooms….

Turn off the power, tie that extra wire to the black one on the fan and that should restore the lights in the other rooms.
Then turn the power back on and check it out.
Good Luck ! ! !
turn off the breaker or remove the fuse before you fool around with it. then the worst you can do is burn thehouse down but at least you will be alive to watch it burn.
Seriously,, for the danger invoved you are better off with an electrician
Sounds like you have a ring circuit and you did dislodge or fail to connect something. What worries me more, though, is the cloth wires you have in the house. Those can be very dangerous because they are usually not grounded.
I would strongly suggest updating your wiring as soon as you possibly can, for safety’s sake. One of the dangers of that kind of wiring is that very often the ceramic knobs that join the wires are in the attic, uncovered, and then people put insulation right over them, which is a great way to start a fire.
I’d recommend calling an electrician to figure this out.
Please do turn off the breaker or remove the fuse before working on this.
I would check to see if the wire that was not connected to anything may have been feeding power to those lights in the other areas. Verify that it was undisturbed and if bare put a wire nut on any open connections. I would also verify that the the two black wires are properly connected to each other and then to your light with the proper size wire nut. If one of those wires is not making a connection it could effect those lights.
I am not an expert only someone that has done some of his own electrical stuff in the past. If this still does not work call in an expert.
Either you have the wires mixed up, or maybe when you screwed the marrette back on or disturbed the wiring in the box, you might have loosened a wire inside of its marrette ( some people call marrettes wire nuts). You can try carefully wiggling each wire to see if it is loose inside of each marrette to see if you can find a loose one. I would do this alot of times with the power on, which would indicate a loose wire right away by actually turning on the problem light fixture ( with the switch on), but you should probably have the power for that circuit off at the panel. If you find a loose wire, take that marrette right off and re screw it back on with the wires better placed into position. If that does not fix your problem, then likely you have the wires mixed up, and once you do that it is very hard for a novice to get it right again. You need a multimeter, and some testing skill. You will have to take circuits apart and test for continuity to figure out what goes where. With a switch, most of the time, the white wire goes from the power soarce to the switch , then returns to power the device with the black wire. Here in Canada, this wiring method is part of the code. That is just wiring method for a simple switch though…it gets more complicated sometimes. So, your next step is to get some books and read up on electrical circuitry and diagnostics… These books can be expensive and this process can take up hours of your time. You might want to consider calling an electician to fix you up before investing any more of your time and money. Good Luck!
